Graduate study is a journey of increasing independence, expertise, and professional development. While each program may have their own unique milestones, most graduate students need to work through and complete similar stages as they progress from their first year to the completion of their degree.  To better understand what these stages, are please click the boxes below to get step-by-step descriptions of the required stages in your first year, intermediate years, and final year. First Year

In the first year, students focus on building a strong academic foundation. Coursework introduces key theories, methods, and concepts in their field. Students also identify research interests, connect with faculty mentors, establish their advisory committees and begin shaping their thesis, dissertation, or project ideas. 

Intermediate Years

During the intermediate years, students deepen their specialization and transition from coursework to independent research. They focus on developing and refining their thesis or dissertation proposals, often completing comprehensive or qualifying exams. As research, data analysis, and writing progress, students may also present at conferences, publish findings, and gain professional experience through teaching or assistantship roles, all supported by regular guidance from advisors and committees to ensure steady progress toward degree completion.

Final Year

In the final stage, students finalize their research, write and defend their thesis or dissertation, and prepare for graduation. This can also be a time to focus on the next steps career preparation, publication, or postdoctoral and professional opportunities. Throughout the graduate journey, consistent communication with advisors, careful time management, and engagement with the graduate community all contribute to a successful and fulfilling experience.
