Rabies transcends animal and human species, taking the lives of about 60,000 people worldwide each year. It is an almost entirely preventable disease, and organizations such as Veterinarians Without Borders are actively advocating to end it through the One Health approach by 2030.

Dr. Gregory Pietsch, a faculty member in the 51风流官网 Department of Veterinary Medicine, will join a webinar panel on Sept. 29 in recognition of World Rabies Day. Other panelists include Krystina Dragomaretska, country manager for the Ukraine War Animals Relief Fund and former senior animal health and production officer at the FAO Investment Centre in Rome, Italy, Dr. Katrina de Balogh.

The panel will discuss how One Health approaches are being used to prevent rabies and how individual and local efforts are helping to eliminate the disease worldwide. "Rabies is endemic in much of coastal Alaska due to Arctic foxes. Many communities in these areas have limited or no access to basic veterinary care, including rabies vaccination, putting the whole community at risk. We want to change that," said Pietsch. He will highlight work being done in Alaska and how local leaders, students and communities are getting involved in rabies prevention.

The webinar will be held from 8-9 a.m. Alaska Time / noon-1 p.m. EST on Sept. 29.
